Branding and packaging

Toy Packaging at HGL – Award Winners
In my time at HGL, many of the products I was involved in became award winners. Again as tended to be the case at HGL, product photography, logo creation, typography, decal design and packaging layout was conducted by me. The Nebulus Scooter won many awards over the years being both an attractive and price conscious choice for consumers wanting to buy a good quality but budget micro-scooter. This scooter spawned multiple variations – the version below was an edgier black painted model, whereas the “bread and butter” version was chrome finish. The LightBurst scooter was a big seller too – available over the years in many different styles. It’s light-up deck was quite a revelation at the time.

My First Flashing Trike (MFFT) was also a big success available in both light blue and pink/magenta colourways. In some cases, Martin the boss, would source products which were essentially white label – we would just rebadge and restyle them. But in some cases, such as the MFFT, this was developed from the ground up. We would provide the factory with some initial guidance regarding style and function, and over time we would reiterate, liasing with 3D artists and so on to refine the design, with cost invariably impacting design decisions. Some pocket money toys were very successful too, with the Megasaurs sets being very consistent sellers over the years.
